From Scientist to Leader: How Danaher’s Sarah Kehoe, PhD, Gained Confidence in Her Career

While confidence is important for any professional, it’s essential for those who want to grow their careers and lead teams. Just ask Sarah Kehoe, PhD, Vice President, Execution & Process Excellence, Danaher Diagnostics (one of Danaher’s three platforms). Sarah intentionally sought out people within Danaher, especially female scientific leaders, who she could learn from to develop more confidence, while also pursuing growth opportunities to practice on the job.

A woman with long brown hair wearing a purple formal dress spreads her arms wide over her head while speaking at a podium in front of a purple curtain. She is smiling and looks excited about her speech.

Even from a young age, Sarah knew she wanted to make a difference in the fight against disease to improve patient outcomes. So after earning her PhD in molecular cell biology and working her early years at a cancer institute, it’s no surprise that she eventually landed at Beckman Coulter (a Danaher business) in 2010, and over time, worked her way up to the Chief Innovation Office for Danaher Diagnostics.

As Sarah’s responsibilities grew, so did her need for leadership training and development. Fortunately, Danaher is committed to developing future leaders who can turn ideas to impact and accelerate Danaher’s mission to innovate at the speed of life. The company saw Sarah’s leadership potential and invested in her.

Stepping up to become a leader

“Over the past 15 years, Danaher has invested a lot in my career development as a leader,” she said. “I’ve attended multiple leadership programs and have taken the Harvard Core Credential of Readiness ‘mini-MBA’ business course, which Danaher graciously paid for. Danaher also invested in me from a mentoring perspective, pairing me up with different leaders according to my development goals and targeted areas for growth. Some of these have included business presidents and general manager mentors that I met with quarterly.”

As Sarah’s career progressed, she also received timely coaching through Danaher’s Women + Friends Associate Resource Group, which gave her the confidence to write a 250-page proposal that won Danaher an $8 million BARDA award to develop AI algorithms for infectious disease applications.

“Without that coaching, I wouldn’t have had the courage to try,” she said.

Sarah’s numerous sponsors, mentors and coaches, including a former boss that became a “mentor of a lifetime,” left an incredible impact on Sarah’s career and her own personal and professional journey.

“I learned how to delegate, how to give real-time and fair feedback, and how to be more self-aware,” she said. “Most importantly, I learned how to be an effective and authentic servant leader, even in times of stress. By learning empathy-based and logical decision-making techniques, I was able to create a high-performing team without compromising my values of ensuring psychological safety and intellectual honesty.”

    Countering those “inner gremlins”

Based on her previous scientific roles, Sarah can definitely relate to other female leaders in STEM fields. During her career, she has encountered “imposter syndrome”—feelings of self-doubt and personal incompetence that persist despite one’s education, experience and accomplishments. But she never let these negative feelings stop her.

“One particular book—Tara Mohr’s ‘Playing Big’—which I was gifted through the Women + Friends Associate Resource Group, really impacted my career and how I deal with my ‘gremlins’ and inner critics that drain energy and cause self-doubt,” she said. “Those feelings never go away entirely but learning how to keep them in check so that you can be in the right headspace is essential to creativity and innovation. This is especially applicable but not limited to women.”

Would you fit at Danaher? What does Sarah look for in potential candidates?

“I look for people who are passionate and drawn to our mission to innovate at the speed of life for the purpose of improving the lives of patients around the world. Having a high emotional intelligence is also extremely important. It’s key to working well on teams as you chart the course and deal with ambiguity.”

    Learning to play big

“During my time with Danaher, I’ve learned how to play big,” said Sarah. “I’ve found out how to shed fear. I’ve learned that even though you’re out of your comfort zone, you go for it and you grow—and you lean into becoming a leader, even if you don’t feel ready. Danaher supports you in getting you there.”

In fact, those times of stretching are now among Sarah’s favorite memories.

“Some of my proudest moments at Danaher were when I was pushed out of my comfort zone and when people believed in me enough to take a chance on me,” she said. “For example, in 2022 I was given sponsorship responsibility for Excellence in Innovation—an annual awards event where Danaher brings together hundreds of people from all over the world to celebrate our Diagnostic companies’ top science and technology innovators. I had to go on stage and read from a teleprompter, which I had never done before, to recognize the top innovators in the company, including a special award honoring the legacy of my former boss who had been a driving force in sparking a culture of innovation at Danaher, but had recently passed away from breast cancer.

In 2023 the stakes got higher when I was invited to moderate a patient panel at the “Danaher Summit: Diagnostics Insights to Impact” in front of 200+ executives and world-renowned scientists inclusive of Nobel Laureates, Danaher’s founders and Danaher’s CEO.

Watch Sarah moderate the panel, “The Access Odyssey: When Health Equity is Not Equal” at Danaher’s 2023 Summit

Confidence-building experiences like these are what keep Sarah happily growing at Danaher.

“I’ve been with Danaher 15 years because Danaher offers so many opportunities to grow and learn as a leader, while doing work that is helping to improve patient outcomes,” she said. “I’ve had many roles over the years and have influenced the creation of my own future roles by identifying business needs and pitching ways I can help. Danaher is very data-driven and uses logic in their decision-making, which my ‘inner scientist’ greatly values.”

The Right Treatment at the Right Time: How Sarah Kehoe and Danaher Diagnostics Are Transforming Patient Care

Sarah Kehoe’s desire to help save lives through science started in an unexpected place—on horseback. Yet her youthful zeal led her to where she is today, part of a team leading innovation for Danaher Diagnostics and driving life-saving diagnostic testing for patients all over the world. What she didn’t know is that one of the lives that Danaher Diagnostics’ technologies would eventually touch would be her own.

As a teenager, Sarah spent several years giving riding lessons at Camp Fantastic—a week-long adventure camp for children with cancer. Sarah’s time with the kids sparked strong empathy for patients and a strong desire to find a cure for cancer, which motivated her to get a PhD in Molecular Cell Biology from the University of Florida.

Sarah’s journey to fulfill her youthful dream

After graduate school, Sarah started her career as a group leader in clinical genomics for the Dana Farber Cancer Institute, identifying cancer patients with druggable DNA mutations and matching them to treatments that would target those mutations. A few years later, she transitioned to industry—joining Beckman Coulter (a Danaher Diagnostics business) as a senior clinical studies scientist supporting genomics. In this role, Sarah worked with clinicians and researchers worldwide to sequence patient DNA and RNA, and bioinformatically analyze the data to reveal insights into genomic root causes of patient disease.

“I wanted to scale patient impact globally—beyond a single hospital’s patient population,” she said. “Since then, my journey has evolved to focus on additional disease states, not only cancer, because Danaher capabilities can help clinicians move the needle on many diagnostically preventable deaths. As I became a people leader, I realized it’s about force multiplication. The way to make an impact is by partnering as a team and growing future leaders, not followers. Together, we can play a bigger role than going it alone.”

After a series of career moves within Danaher, Sarah now serves as Vice President, Execution & Process Excellence within the Chief Innovation Office for Danaher Diagnostics (one of Danaher’s three platforms).

“My work involves leading innovation programs and teams focused on developing novel diagnostics for neurodegenerative disease, infectious disease and cancer to enable precision medicine,” she said.

For example, Sarah’s team has been involved in executing Danaher’s diagnostics-focused Beacons programs, which invest in pioneering academic research to impact human health.

Seeing her passion turn into impact

Over the years, Sarah has seen Danaher’s technology at work in many exciting ways. One example was at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. At the time, Sarah’s team was using a blood analyzer from Beckman Coulter to do a sepsis study at Mass General Hospital in Boston. When COVID-19 hit and children started getting multisystem inflammatory syndrome (MIS-C)—a rare but deadly condition that can develop weeks after an initial SARS-CoV-2 infection—Danaher was right there to pivot and begin studies to understand why.

“Our principal investigators wheeled the instrument down the hall and started an IRB-compliant clinical study for MIS-C because they realized monocyte distribution width (MDW)—the same biomarker we were using as an early indicator of sepsis—is also an early warning light for MIS-C,” said Kehoe. “This led us to winning almost $1 million in BARDA government funding to do a MIS-C study in kids. This was all because of our principal investigator’s awareness of how our devices could help children with this rare condition.”

Sarah went on to co-author that MIS-C study in 2022.

Closer to home: Becoming a patient herself

More recently, Sarah witnessed the pivotal role that diagnostic testing plays in improving patient outcomes in a much more personal way. In December 2024, she got a severe case of meningitis, which put her in the hospital for eight days.

“During that experience, I had a massively broad barrage of diagnostic tests run as part of my treatment plan, many of which leveraged Danaher’s diagnostic tests being run at the hospital’s core lab and at send-out reference labs, including IVD tests from Beckman Coulter, Cepheid and Radiometer,” she said. “This personal patient experience really solidified in my mind how heavily reliant clinicians are on diagnostics to save patient lives. Diagnostics provides a window into the biological problems going on in the body, and without this, doctors cannot intervene with the right life-saving treatments at the right time. After a brief medical leave, I returned to work with a renewed passion and sense of purpose for the work we do at Danaher every day.”

Coming full circle and looking forward to what’s next

Today, Sarah is back to full health and excited about the future. What started as a dream to help cure cancer, has led Sarah to where she is today—in a thriving, satisfying career that impacts lives all around the globe.

Parker Pell: Norman, thanks much for taking the time and joining the show.

Norman Jones: Thanks for having me here, Parker.

Parker Pell: Super excited to dive into all things Danaher and Danaher’s university programs in our conversation today. But just for starters, do you mind just introducing yourself and talking a bit about your role at Danaher to the audience?

Norman Jones: Sure. My name is Norman Jones. I am the Global Director of University Recruitment here at Danaher. I’ll hit my two-year mark at the end of August of this year. And my main job is to make sure that we’re bringing in early career talent, whether it’s interns or full-time hires from universities. And I could be undergrad, masters, PhD and MBA talent to be the future leaders of our company. So happy to be here with you and to engage with you.

Parker Pell: Excited as well. And I mean, let’s introduce Danaher for a second. For an audience that might not have heard of the company before. Can you talk a bit about who is Danaher and talk about what the company does as well?

Norman Jones: Danaher is a leading global life sciences and diagnostics innovator, helping to solve many of the world’s most important health challenges. Ultimately, improving quality of life for billions of people today while setting the foundation for a healthier and more sustainable tomorrow.

Parker Pell: And I’m always curious when we bring guests on the show. To hear your perspective, Norman, what do you love about working at Danaher?

Norman Jones: I love that at the end of the day, our main mission is to ensure we’re improving people’s health. It makes me proud to say I work at Danaher. Also, I have an amazing manager who believes in me and is actively developing me, which is important to me as a working professional. And lastly, I have an amazing team of recruiters that I get to lead as we bring on the future leaders of our organization.

Parker Pell: I love that Danaher is so invested in bringing in early talent, whether it’s intern or full-time individuals to the company to really make an impact. I’m curious, Norman, as your team is going out and recruiting this awesome talent, could you talk a bit about maybe some of the skills that you and the team are looking for in a candidate for whether it’s your internship or your full-time opportunities?

Norman Jones: Of course. For our intern and full-time, entry-level associate roles, we recruit for talent that has, that wants to leverage their degrees in whether it’s in the corporate environment, the R&D space, or the manufacturing supply chain space. So some majors we’re recruiting for include accounting and finance, biology, chemistry, engineering, whether it’s mechanical, biomedical, electrical, computer, industrial.

Parker Pell: I love to hear that, Norman. And I mean, for students that show those skills and get that opportunity to come and join Danaher, I want to focus a bit on the internship program for a second. Can you give us an overview of what the internship program is going to look like for a Danaher intern?

Norman Jones: Yeah. So our internship program here at Danaher is 12 weeks long. Typically, sometimes 10 depending on a school timeframe of some students and where they go to school at. But typically, it is 12 weeks long. And even before you start our internship, our intern program lead is reaching out to you to get to know you, to get you excited about coming on to Danaher. We work with the hiring manager to make sure that there’s meaningful work that the interns are going to be doing, that they’re going to find to be a value add to their future. And then once you come on board, it’s all about how to make sure you’re doing great work that’s going to be beneficial to Danaher but also having fun. So we work hard to make sure that while you’re learning a lot that you can add to your resume, you’re also building camaraderie amongst other interns here. So we work very hard to build engagement, bring people together, celebrate you, do lunch and learns, do executive talks where we bring leaders in to engage with you. And just make sure at the end of the day, you had a great experience overall.

Parker Pell: We know that community and that engagement is really what students are looking for when they’re choosing a company, obviously, to go in intern for. You talked about those lunch and learns, maybe the executive speaker series, any other kind of workshops or events y’all are hosting throughout the program that you could speak to, that interns are going to have the opportunity to attend?

Norman Jones: Yeah, I think one of our biggest things that we do is we bring the interns together for what we call DBS week. We DBS stands for Danaher Business System. It’s our core values. It’s our culture. It’s what we live and breathe here at Danaher.

So we bring our interns together at a location somewhere in the US for a week long immersion into DBS. We bring on one of our DBS experts who come in and facilitate what DBS is, whether it’s educating them on what kaizen’s are and putting them through a mini kaizen, whether it’s putting them through PSP, which stands for Problem Solving Processes, whether it’s talking about the five Y’s to get to the root of the problem. So we try to have that immersion where you get to learn what we live and breathe here at Danaher because our hope is that you’ll be able to take that back to your school environment and apply DBS as you’re working through problems in class or preparing for exams or team presentations. So DBS is a huge thing for us and bringing those interns together is a great way for them to learn truly what makes Danaher, Danaher, but also allows them to engage with each other in person because we have interns flying in from all over the country.

Parker Pell: I think that’s so cool and such a unique component to Danaher’s internship program, right? Because they’re getting that experience, obviously, of interning, working at Danaher, getting to network, but the practicality behind what they’re learning throughout their internship and being able to apply that back to when they’re in school, right? I think it’s just invaluable. And I’m sure that Danaher interns are loving their experience. Do you have any feedback from former Danaher interns that you could share about kind of what generally they’ve said their experience has been like?

Norman Jones: Yeah, of course. And I’m one who likes to focus on both positives and areas for development. You know, sometimes I’m not going to just tell you all the great things that interns have said because I don’t think that’s realistic. No internship is 100% perfect. But with regards to the positives, we’ve heard interns say that they love the experience because they felt like they really got to do meaningful work. We’ve had interns talk about how they love the culture of the operating company that they’re a part of. We’ve had interns talk about how they love coming together. We really got the network and bond with other interns, how they really enjoyed that DBS week. We’ve had also some other interns who gave us feedback on how we could be better. You know, I mean, like I said, at Danaher, we’re all always about continuous improvement. How can we continue continuously get better because that’s what we strive for.

We feel that perfection is never really something you can obtain or something you’re always reaching for. You know, so we asked our interns for feedback that let us know what we could do better so they could have a better experience. You know, so we do want the instructive feedback as well as the positive feedback.

Parker Pell: I love that though, because it’s a two-way street, right? And I think that the receptiveness for a company like Danaher to feedback from interns even goes farther to elevate y’all’s program overall. And you’re putting a ton into bringing in this early career talent into Danaher to really make an impact. Norman, as your team thinks about the goals for the internship program, what would some of those be?

Norman Jones: Yep. And I can tell you now, Parker, we have four goals that we always set for ourselves. And we stand by the first goal, is for interns to have a meaningful internship experience, where they can put where they can apply what they’ve learned in their classes in a work environment. Our second goal, is for our interns to experience our culture of learning, teamwork, knowledge sharing and continuous improvement. Our third goal, is to make the internship a fun experience for all of our interns. And our last goal is conversion. We want to ensure that all our interns that are successful are converted, whether it’s to come back as a full time associate the following year, or to come back as a returning intern the following summer.

Parker Pell: Norman, this has been so fun to not only learn about Danaher, the company, but also Danaher’s university programs, both intern and full time and all the investment that y’all are putting into delivering this awesome experience for early talent that gets an opportunity to join Danaher. I’d love for us to close out the show, and it’s going to be a tough question. But if you wanted a listener to leave the show, knowing kind of one thing about Danaher or about other of the programs that we’ve discussed today, what would you want to leave listeners with?

Norman Jones: I would like a listener to know that Danaher is a great place to start, grow and end your career. You know, I’ve been here for almost two years, and I don’t see myself leaving anytime soon. I thoroughly enjoy the work I do. But more importantly, I really enjoy the people I work with. And again, like I said, at the end of the day, our mission here is to improve the lives of every human on this planet. And for me, that’s made me so proud to say how we’re going to Danaher.

Parker Pell: Couldn’t agree with you more, Norman. Thanks so much again for the time today. We really appreciate the conversation.

Norman Jones: Thank you, Parker. It was great talking to you.

Parker Pell: So fun chatting with Norman to learn about Danaher, Danaher’s university programs, and so much more about everything early career going on at their company. Stay tuned for the next episode of The Internship Show and have a great day.

  • Succeeding in a STEM Career: Logan Haller Shares Her Journey and Advice

Succeeding in a STEM Career: Logan Haller Shares Her Journey and Advice

    4-minute read

Long before Logan Haller joined Danaher, she was simply a high school student who loved science. Her passion grew with every science fair, student competition and research class—ultimately solidifying her career path.

Finding her focus in public health

During her undergrad work at the University of Florida, Logan honed her focus in microbiology and went on to earn a Master of Science in Public Health (MSPH) from the University of South Florida. Her public health studies sought to understand and address the broader implications of infectious diseases on communities and populations.

After graduate school, she spent the next 15 years at two not-for-profit contract research organizations (Southern Research Institute and MRIGlobal) where she tested early-in-development vaccines and therapeutics for preventing and treating infectious diseases. While she found the work interesting, she yearned for more.

She pursued her Project Management Professional (PMP) certification to help transition from the lab bench to a study director role and she began seeking new opportunities.

    Discovering her place at Danaher

“I had the desire to get closer to patients and make more of a patient impact,” she said. “I was also very curious about the commercial side and wanted to explore the other half of the equation. Danaher, comprised of many different businesses in the Diagnostics and Life Sciences space, offered those opportunities.”

The organization’s commitment to precision medicine and innovative diagnostics was another draw.

“Danaher’s focus on creating tools and technologies that enable healthcare providers to diagnose diseases with unprecedented speed and accuracy aligned perfectly with my goal of making a tangible difference on public health,” she said.

In 2019, Logan joined Danaher company, Beckman Coulter, as a Senior Program Manager, managing hematology projects. It was a great way to leverage her PMP certification, but she still felt a piece was missing. Three years later, seeking to delve deeper into scientific innovation, she took a role with Danaher’s Diagnostics platform (a collective six diagnostics businesses), where she now focuses on clinical alliances and incubation.

Hear more from Logan about working on the cutting edge of diagnostic innovations

Innovative work that’s making an impact

“In my current role as Senior Manager, Clinical Alliances and Incubation, I serve as the connective tissue between Danaher operating companies, continually asking questions like, ‘How can we collaborate and facilitate more innovation?’ and ‘Is there a better approach?’”, she explained. “A significant part of my role is to question the status quo. This critical thinking helps us uncover underlying issues and opportunities for improvement.”

“Once we have a clear understanding of the challenges, I work to identify gaps and seek ways to support the unmet need,” she said. “I play a key role in facilitating innovation by bringing together cross-functional teams and fostering a collaborative environment. By supporting the ideation and incubation of scientific beacons, I’m able to de-risk future indications of new, emerging technologies and contribute to public health on a larger scale.”

Reflecting on her STEM journey: Logan’s advice

At first, Logan found it challenging to navigate the industry, but fortunately, she connected with a tremendous resource during her time at Southern Research Institute. “I had the most unbelievable mentor that took me under her wing and showed me how to be confident,” said Logan. “Things I initially considered challenges soon became opportunities for growth and learning.”

Beyond the power of mentoring, Logan has learned many other valuable lessons that have helped advance her career.

    • Believe in yourself. Confidence is key. Trust in your abilities and knowledge, and don’t be afraid to voice your ideas and opinions.
    • Seek mentorship. Find mentors who can provide guidance, support and advice. Mentors can help you navigate your career path and open doors to new opportunities. Also, be a mentor for others. Give back, knowing that everyone is in this together.
    • Network actively. Build a strong professional network. Attend conferences, join professional organizations, and connect with peers in your field. Networking can lead to collaborations and career advancements.
    • Embrace challenges. View challenges as opportunities to learn and grow. Don’t be discouraged by setbacks; instead, use them as stepping-stones to success. Stay curious and keep learning.

    Enjoying the Danaher difference

Based on Logan’s nearly six years here, she’s quick to recommend Danaher and its businesses to others seeking impactful work.

“Danaher fosters a culture where new ideas are encouraged and supported, making it an exciting place for those who are passionate about pushing the boundaries of science and technology and want to think outside the box,” she said. “Danaher has allowed me to find my passion and discover a unique path where science, innovation, and program management intersect.”

A bright future at Danaher awaits

Looking ahead, Logan is excited about the opportunities before her.

“I envision myself in roles that continually challenge me to think outside the box, assemble disparate puzzle pieces, and synthesize scientific and innovative ideas,” she said. “I thrive in collaborative environments and am eager to work with dynamic teams to drive impactful solutions that improve patient lives.”

  • From Academia to Industry: How Adam Chernick, PhD/MBA, Pivoted Roles to Enable Scientific Breakthroughs

From Academia to Industry: How Adam Chernick, PhD/MBA, Pivoted Roles to Enable Scientific Breakthroughs

Sometimes, career moves happen purely by chance. Just ask Adam Chernick, PhD/MBA, an associate at IDT (a Danaher business), who was in the right place at the right time for a tremendous career opportunity.

In 2016, while working on his PhD, Adam was considering using an IDT product to selectively enrich a specific viral genome to improve the on-target sequencing rate. He was working with IDT’s applications support team to explore that solution and had a discussion with the local sales manager, who mentioned he was looking to hire an inside sales representative.

“I’d already been considering non-academic careers at that point, and the opportunity to move into a non-academic career while still getting to use my scientific knowledge every day was very compelling—and IDT sounded like the kind of place where I could do that,” explained Adam. “It was also an opportunity to learn more about the business side of science, where I really had no personal experience.”

Adam was hired for that role and two years later, IDT was acquired by Danaher. Every few years, he progressed to higher roles until landing in his current role as Senior Commercial Product Manager – CRISPR, in May 2023.

Today, he manages a team of Commercial Product Managers who oversee the launch and maintenance of IDT’s CRISPR and Functional Genomics products. He works closely with other teams to take mature technologies and get them ready for customers to purchase and use in their own experiments. He also collaborates with many other IDT functional teams—from manufacturing and R&D to legal and sales—on product updates such as new features, pricing and marketing materials.

Thriving in a culture of continuous improvement

With access to Danaher’s portfolio of best practices (known as the Danaher Business System or DBS), Adam finds his work especially fulfilling.

“DBS helps us tackle a whole range of business and technical challenges in reproducible and dependable ways,” he said. “Danaher has been using DBS successfully for decades, and the DBS toolbox has taken that success and enshrined it into something everyone here can use in their daily work.”

Making a real difference—one experiment at a time

“It’s exciting to see my work contribute to something that scientists all around the world use every day,” he said. “Not every industry gets to say that they contribute to positive change in the world, but IDT products are integral for customers who are advancing medicine and our collective understanding of biology—that’s truly inspiring.”

“While customers are doing their work, we’re committed to learning about their challenges and developing tools to help overcome them,” he added. “This is a really satisfying way to apply my technical background to solving problems that’s a little different from running my own research program in an academic setting.”

Going forward, Adam isn’t sure what his career future looks like, but he knows it will be exciting.

“Most of the products I support are based on CRISPR, a technology that’s barely a decade old,” he said. “I doubt anyone can truly predict what the future holds in such an innovative and dynamic industry, but I’m excited to be part of it.”

Over the past decade, CRISPR has taken life sciences and the biomedical world by storm for its ability to easily and precisely edit DNA. Today at Integrated DNA Technologies (IDT) (a Danaher company), Bahri Karacay, PhD, Sr. Manager, Product Marketing Gene Writing and Editing, applies himself to advancing this innovative technology, both for research and therapeutic applications. Not only is this work his passion, it’s also his way of helping Danaher innovate at the speed of life.

Tell us a bit about your background.

Originally from Türkiye, I came to the US for graduate school. I received my PhD from The Ohio State University and did part of my postdoctoral work at Nationwide Children’s Research Institute in Columbus. After my lab moved, I completed my postdoctoral work at the University of Iowa, Carver College of Medicine. I continued after finishing my postdoc as a research scientist in its Child Neurology Division.

What drew you to IDT initially?

As a research professor at the University of Iowa, Carver College of Medicine and a long-standing customer of IDT, I knew IDT and its solutions very well. I was always curious about working in the life sciences industry, so when I was ready to make the switch from academia to industry, IDT was the first logical place to start.

What does your current role entail?

Currently, I lead a product marketing team for the Gene Writing and Editing product portfolio. That includes CRISPR genome editing products and services, both for research and therapeutic applications, as well as gene regulation and synthetic biology products that are mainly for research applications. In simplest terms, we empower scientists to rewrite the code of life through strategic marketing, data-driven insights, and engaging educational content.

What does your day-to-day work look like?

My day-to-day work is dynamic, revolving around strategy, collaboration and execution. I develop marketing strategies and tactics to drive the success of our portfolio, focusing on customer-centric messaging and market trends. Leading a talented team, I provide guidance and support on various projects. Additionally, I serve on cross-functional teams to bring innovative products and services to market.

Since last year, I’ve also enjoyed supporting cross-company initiatives between IDT and Aldevron, another Danaher business. Together, we work towards delivering impactful solutions for customers in the cell and gene therapy space, including Current Good Manufacturing Practice (CGMP) manufacturing and Research Use Only (RUO)-to-CGMP workflows. My work is a blend of strategic thinking, creativity, science, and teamwork—making every day exciting and fulfilling.

Since you’ve been with IDT, what are some of your most memorable moments?

One of the most memorable moments was the ribbon-cutting ceremony for IDT’s state-of-the-art therapeutic oligonucleotide manufacturing (TOM) facility in October 2023. This marked a major milestone for IDT, as it represented our entry into therapeutic space. Until then, we had primarily supported our customers in the discovery phase of their research. With the opening of the TOM facility, we now offer a comprehensive end-to-end workflow solution—from bench to bedside.

This achievement was particularly meaningful to me as a former scientist with firsthand experience in gene therapy. I had conducted research focused on developing therapies for two devastating conditions: neuroblastoma, a pediatric cancer of the nervous system typically diagnosed before age five, and Alexander Disease, a rare and fatal neurodegenerative disorder that most commonly strikes in the first decade of life.

Why are you inspired and excited by CRISPR technology?

CRISPR technology has already revolutionized scientific research, and its impact is now transforming medicine as well. With the first CRISPR-based therapies having been approved in December 2024 both in Europe and the United States, we are witnessing the rapid evolution of the technology from research tool to life-saving treatment modality. From groundbreaking cancer treatments to innovative therapies for genetic diseases, CRISPR’s potential seems limitless.

How is your career as a part of Danaher accelerating the power of science and technology to improve human health?

Though I am no longer directly involved in gene therapy research, I feel as though I am still walking side by side with the scientists who are striving for the same life-changing goals. Developing gene therapies for diseases was my passion and purpose, and now, with CRISPR genome editing making that dream a reality, I am proud to continue contributing by enabling scientists with IDT products and resources.

What are some of your interests outside of work?

I’m the founder and lead singer of TURKANA, a band comprised of Turkish and American musicians performing Turkish folk and pop music. I’m also a popular science writer, podcaster and the author of two bestsellers: “The Secret of Life DNA” and “Happy Brain”. My favorite pastime activities are making music and skiing.

Dr. Karacay’s band TURKANA is comprised of professors from the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine. They play Turkish pop and folk tunes, as well as some of Dr. Karacay’s original compositions, at festivals, concerts, cultural events and radio programs.

Why do you think other people in your field would enjoy a job at IDT or another Danaher company?

IDT and other Danaher life sciences companies are great places to work for anyone passionate about advancing science and human health. With Danaher’s promise of ‘innovation at the speed of life’ and IDT’s focus on ‘Accelerating the pace of genomics,’ we’re committed to pushing the boundaries of what’s possible.

Initiatives like the IGI Beacon Program, which aims to expand access to CRISPR technologies, and partnerships that improve genome-editing precision, highlight our impact on global challenges. Associates at IDT or other Danaher life sciences companies benefit from cutting-edge tools, a collaborative culture, and opportunities to grow professionally, making it an ideal environment for those driven to shape the future of science and health. I’ve seen the work we do here and it’s incredibly rewarding to be part of it.

  • Four Companies in 10 Years: Marcy Engelstein’s Dynamic Career Journey with Danaher

Four Companies in 10 Years: Marcy Engelstein’s Dynamic Career Journey with Danaher

The secret to a thriving career is having access to the right opportunities. At any one time, Danaher has more than 1,400 open roles across multiple high-impact industries, with more than 15 businesses on six continents. Based on her own experience, Marcy Engelstein, VP of Marketing at Pall (a Danaher company), is a strong believer that Danaher is the place to find those opportunities.

During a recent discussion, Marcy shared how joining Danaher was a catalyst for her success.

What is your career background and how did you first come to Danaher?

I spent my first 10-12 years in academic research mostly around genetics and genomics topics. I worked at Harvard, MIT, and Mass General Hospital. I’m most proud of the fact that I was part of the global team that helped sequence the Human Genome in the 90s.

From there, I moved into an R&D leader role at Millipore Corporation (a competitor to Pall Life Sciences). I was there for 15 years, in various roles across R&D, project management and marketing before joining Beckman Coulter (a Danaher company) in 2014 as a Global Senior Marketing Manager for the DNA sequencing services business.

Tell us about your Danaher career evolution. What moves did you make between Danaher operating companies?

I have been with Danaher since 2014. I started at Beckman Coulter and then took a role at Danaher Diagnostics, then at Leica Biosystems, and finally at Pall, where I am today.

My first internal move came about in an interesting way. I met with a colleague who was starting up an innovation team at Danaher. Her team’s goal was to look at the impact of new technologies and market shifts over a longer horizon (about five to 20 years), to identify opportunities or threats to our business and help Danaher companies prepare for what may come in the future.

Her team’s objective was very intriguing to me, so much so that I suggested she would need to add marketing muscle to her very technology-heavy team, and when she was ready, she should reach out to me. That actually happened about a year later. I was in that Danaher role around three years and really enjoyed it; but I missed having a more near-term impact. With that in mind, I set my sights on returning to a marketing role with product and sales support responsibility. While facilitating a DBS (Danaher Business Systems) course, I met an associate who connected me to a role in Leica Biosystems (another Danaher company) as Marketing Director for Staining Reagents.

What prompted your move from Leica Biosystems to Pall?

While I was at Leica overseeing marketing for staining reagents, Pall reached out to me via Danaher Go (a program that helps Danaher hire from within). Pall’s Aerospace business unit was seeking its next head of Marketing. At first, I was skeptical since the Aerospace market was very unfamiliar to me. My career had been centered on life science and diagnostics businesses. What convinced me to join was the challenge and opportunity of the role, the passion and collaborative nature of the associates I met through the interview process and the comfort of knowing I was already familiar with the DBS tools and business processes I would need to excel.  Plus, having been at a Pall competitor for so many years, I felt my knowledge in the filtration space would support my transition.

How does Danaher make finding a new role easier?

Danaher offers the Danaher Go program which encourages associates to explore roles across Danaher confidentially. Through the program, associates can explore potential new roles and it has given me the confidence to explore new opportunities that stretch my skills. This, along with networking with other associates while facilitating Kaizens, helped me move between different roles at Beckman, but also helped in my move from Beckman to Leica Biosystems and then to Pall.

    What’s next for you?

With upcoming retirement, and soon-to-be empty nesting, my husband and I plan to relocate from Massachusetts to the Colorado mountains. I have come to love hiking, skiing, biking—anything outdoors—which were not activities I participated in growing up. Our intent is to be outdoors every day, doing some fun and active endeavors.

Bringing Together Diverse Perspectives to Do Good: Ephraim Tsalik Discusses Making an Impact as the Chief Scientific Officer for Infectious Diseases at Danaher Diagnostics

When Ephraim Tsalik transitioned from academia to Danaher, he had the chance to combine his infectious disease expertise with teams across various Danaher operating companies. His work aims to accelerate medical product advancement and improve the future. We met Ephraim to discuss his experience and future goals.

Tell us about your role and what your day-to-day looks like.

My role is chief scientific officer for infectious diseases for Danaher Diagnostics

Before joining Danaher, I was in academia. I was a tenured associate professor at Duke University, and now I maintain an adjunct appointment there. I’m an infectious disease physician by training, and I still do clinical work at the Veteran’s Affairs (VA) hospital in Durham, North Carolina.

In my role at the platform, I have the privilege of getting to interface with a lot of different stakeholders that are both internal and external to figure out what opportunities we should be pursuing.

Do you like the work that you’re doing?

I love it. It’s a lot of fun.

I came in part because I have something to give, but I also have a tremendous amount to receive just working with people who are thinking about the marketing components, the technical components, the commercial elements, and just having all of those different perspectives come together so that we can ultimately advance a product that does good in the world, but also is sort of constrained by the realities of how you make something that people are actually going to use and buy.

What are you looking forward to in your career at Danaher?

One of the things that seems to be shifting to some extent at Danaher is that there’s a recognition that if we’re only focused on the next few years, we’re going to miss out on the activities that we need to start now in order to really innovate and drive the field forward five years from now, seven years from now, 10 years from now.

Given that recognition, there are mechanisms to help enable some of that earlier-stage research, like the Beacon programs, which are opportunities to engage with external collaborators — typically in academia — to help cultivate some of the research that they’re doing with an eye on bringing those discoveries internally to Danaher to develop the products of the future.

Is there anything else that you would like to share for future candidates?

One thing that I wanted to mention for people who may be looking at a similar transition from academia or the clinical world into industry: Danaher is a place that very much embraces the idea of maintaining that visibility. In Danaher speak, going to Gemba, going to where things are, where the things are happening — I found that really valuable to maintain that connection so that I could continue to be a voice of the customer for the company.

    Adapting Leadership to Empower Teams

“I flex my leadership style based on the associate’s needs or situation. However, the style I align closest to is the ‘transformational leader’ – focused on continuous improvement and empowering the team to be problem-solvers. As a leader, I think it’s imperative to go to gemba or “where the work happens” to deeply understand the state of the business, the customer experience, or the challenges that my organization is facing. Then, I ruthlessly prioritize the most critical areas of opportunity!”

Tiffany believes in being flexible and adaptable, tailoring her leadership to meet the unique needs of her team and the challenges at hand. By embracing a transformational leadership style, she creates an environment where everyone feels empowered to innovate and tackle problems head-on.

Leveraging the Danaher Business System for Excellence

“Danaher, and thus Radiometer, is built on the foundation of the Danaher Business System (DBS). It is the ‘how’ we do our work. When we apply the principles of DBS, we expand our capabilities, improve our processes, execute at a higher level, and sustain performance. This ultimately gives us a unique competitive advantage.”

DBS is at the heart of Radiometer’s operations. By consistently applying DBS principles, the team enhances processes, drives continuous improvement, and maintains high performance, giving Radiometer a unique edge in the healthcare industry.

    Driving Growth and Enhancing Experiences

“We are driving significant growth through improving our commercial rigor and execution, expanding our teams, and working on improving our overall customer AND associate experience. “Under Tiffany’s leadership, Radiometer America focuses on robust growth by strengthening commercial strategies, growing the team, and enhancing customer and associate experiences. These initiatives ensure that Radiometer continues to meet the evolving needs of the healthcare sector while providing a supportive and dynamic workplace.

A Journey of Professional Growth within Danaher

“I have essentially grown up at Danaher and will celebrate my 25th year soon. I have progressed my career through experience at three different Danaher Operating Companies. I have been afforded the opportunity to attend many leadership development programs, received valuable coaching from many great leaders and mentors, and gained my MBA with the tuition assistance program. My family has been blessed by the opportunities I have gained here.”

Tiffany’s 25-year journey with Danaher highlights the company’s commitment to nurturing talent. Through diverse experiences, leadership training, and educational support, Danaher has played a crucial role in her personal and professional growth, enabling her to lead Radiometer with expertise and passion.
